Y'know... It's just really hard to feel sorry for junkies. I see them all the time in my job, and the big problem I have with them is that they are RARELY interested in getting off dope. It doesn't seem to matter that their drug habit has driven them to a life of crime, made them unemployable, wrecked their health, and alienated them from their families. All they care about is smoking their next rock or shooting an ampule of boiling heroin into their veins.
I had a defendant stagger in yesterday who was so high that I thought he came in on a parachute. He was 29 and looked like he was 70. He weighed 130, had AIDS and HEP-C from using dirty needles, had never held down a job, had a 200 page RAP sheet, was on disability, and could barely keep his eyes open because he was so saturated with heroin.
The hillarious thing is that he is in a drug treatment program too! He does heroin IN ADDITION TO methadone. So my tax dollars go towards making sure this useless junkie gets extra dope, free AIDS medicine, free housing, and free food. His latest offense? He stole his grandfather's credit card and used it to get cash advances so that he could buy more dope.
The guy's criminal history showed that he just doesn't care abnout anything except dope. Every time he got arrested, it would follow the same pattern: 1. Arrest for some petty offense (dope, theft, burglary, trespassing, etc). 2. Failure to for court. 3. Re-Arrest on that charge. 4. Released on bail (as opposed to recog). 5. Failure to appear. 6. Re-Arrest on that charge. 7. Held without bond until trial. 8. At trial, some liberal judge would give him a verdict of "time served". 9. Out on the street -- REPEAT!
This jerk was at Step 4 yesterday.
Personally, I wish that junkies could just be "put to sleep" like diseased animals.

The thing I've noticed about the defendants that use drugs is that each type kills off a piece of their psyche.
Marihuana kills off ambition. Most defendants who abuse Marihuana aren't mean or cruel, but it just seems like the psychologically stop aging at whatever age they were when they started smoking pot. Thus, you have a lot of 40. year-old potheads that still live with their live with their parents and work $6/ hour jobs.
Cocaine kills off empathy. People on cocaine do vicious and cruel things to the people they love. They turn into nasty predators.
Heroin kills off one's soul. the people addicted to heroin really are the walking dead. Their skin shrivels, their teeth fall out, and they become frighteningly gaunt. The sacred fire that makes one truly alive just gutters and extinguishes. After that, a heroin addict just staggers around looking for the next fix. they have sold their souls.
Personally, I think people who SELL heroin should be imprisoned in the deepest dungeons of the Yucca Flats salt mine. They should never be allowed to seethe sun.

My partner's sister is a completely useless leach. I don't use the word "useless" lightly, but I can't think of a better word.
She has apparently started using cocaine *again*. This is the third time she's gotten herself in trouble with dope. It's too bad she never gets an overdose.
The first time she became an addict, it drove my partner's father to suicide. The second time, she blew through her $30,000 inheritance in just 3 months. Lord knows what will happen this time. With dope dealers coming to her home on a regular basis, it just can't end well.
Aside from her dope problem, she uses her so-called disability as an excuse not to work. Her "disabilities" are depression and dyslexia. Gimme a break. I have dyslexia, depression, *and* a dissociative disorder, and I've never been unemployed for more than 48 hours since I was 13.
Her personality is also just plain nasty. She's greedy, cheap, lazy, cruel, hot-headed, violent, jealous, bigoted, and foul of mouth.

Lemme tell ya: there is such a thing as too much of a good thing...
But it was a lot of fun...
My partner and I went to an awesome Drag Queen bar called "Lips" last night. It was both fun and funny. Lips is decorated in a total tacky 70's motif and is hosted by a gaggle of drama-prone gay men ln sequin gowns. The decor included lava lamps and disco balls.
The food was *fantastic*, and the booze was really good. There was even a drag queen lip-sync show.
It's a good thing that our straight friend (Dana) was with us, since my partner and I managed to rack up a $110 bar tab by the time it was all over.
Me: 6 Cosmopolitan Martinies
Partner: 1 lemon-tini, 3 margaritis, 1 shot of some mystery booze.
As amazing at it sounds, our hangovers weren't *too* bad the next day. And belng Multiple means never passing out from too much booze!
